Looking for a new sofa? Here is my Maiden Home sofa review – The Sullivan.
As a designer, I’ve purchased quite a bit of furniture for my clients. Over the years, I have shopped at many local furniture stores, and also made a lot of purchases online. Having done most of my business in the Boston area, there are plenty of options for shopping local. Now that I am in a much smaller town, there are very few options locally, which means online shopping is something I do more often.
I decided during Covid that I was ready for a new sofa … not the best timing. But, like most people, we were spending a lot of time in our homes and I just wanted mine to be more cozy. We were hosting Bible study with several young adults and the living room setup I had just wasn’t ideal. I wanted more seating and more comfortable seating. Plus my husband and I are cuddlers so we needed a sofa that was conducive for that.
One thing I always told my clients was never buy a sofa you can’t sit on. Chairs, yes … sofa, no. Sofa’s are such a big investment and who wants to buy one only to find out you don’t like it? Because of the Covid situation and stores being closed, I had lots of time on my hands to research sofa’s. A friend of mine introduced me to Maiden Home and I scoffed at her … who would buy a sofa you can’t test drive? But I scoured the internet looking into what people thought about this company. I read lots of blog reviews, so I figured I’d add mine to the mix.
One thing I really loved was they are “local” – here in the US – North Carolina. I don’t know about you but I’m a bit weary of buying furniture from overseas that is cheaply made. And a sofa is something you want to buy quality – you really know the difference between a cheaply made sofa and one that is quality. This is, in my opinion, the #1 piece of furniture you want to buy quality.
After reading review after review of what people thought of their Maiden Home furniture, I decided to go ahead and place an order. I’ll admit … I was holding my breath hoping all these reviewers were right. And I’m happy to say there are.
So here are reasons I decided to buy this sofa, even though I couldn’t test drive it:
- Locally made
- Solid construction
- Beautiful design – modern yet comfy
- Great fabric options which are super durable
- Amazing warranty
I’ll go through each reason with more detail.
Locally made
Each piece is handcrafted using artisans right here in the USA. Unless you’re buying European antiques, having American made furniture is going to give you some good quality. Another great part of Maiden Home is you are buying directly from the manufacturer – no middle man. This makes dealing with questions or issues a breeze.
solid construction
Here’s where you get what you pay for. These pieces are HEAVY! This is not furniture you sit on the floor and lean on and it moves across the room (you know what I’m talking about, right?). Once you get it in place, you’ll want to leave it there for a while … it’s a bear to move. Remember your grandmothers sofa? The really ugly one but the one that weighed a ton? That’s what you’re getting here, only much prettier.
Frame
The frame is well built and has a great warranty. They describe it well so here is what their website says about the frame: “We precision-cut our upholstered frames using 1” thick plywood made of kiln dried hardwood that is glued, double doweled and corner blocked for extra support. In some instances, like our Leroy and Hayes chairs, we use solid kiln-dried hardwood for the frame. All this means no warping, no cracking, no splitting and no faulty corners. We’re so confident in the longevity of our frames, each is covered by a lifetime warranty.”
Cushions
The cushions are very well made – foam core wrapped in feather/down (they do have a down alternative if you prefer). They are hefty as well – you can tell how well they are made based off their weight (no cheap foam here). Even though they have down, they do not need much fluffing. I probably “fluff” my cushions every other month when I remove them all and vacuum everything. Because the cushions are so heavy, they stay in place. But to make sure they stay in place, the seat cushions come with clips to hold them to the frame. I have not had any issues with feathers sticking out. They also do not leave a “bum print” where someone sat. They are a perfect balance of sink-in comfort and support.
Beautiful design
My sectional is the Sullivan. I really like the simple clean lines because to me it is very classic and will look good for a long time. You can see the seat cushions are one long cushion on each of the sectional pieces. What I love about this is no one is sitting in the crack. There are very short feet, and I like how low the sofa body sits so you can’t see all the dust bunnies under it. My sectional pieces are 98″ (right) and 99″ (left). The feet are the color pecan. The depth of the seat is perfectly deep – you can tuck your legs under yourself if you like to sit casually, and you are not so far back you have to have someone pull you out.
All of Maiden Home styles are really beautiful … it’s all about personal preference.
great fabric options
Maiden Home offers many fabric options in various colors and textures. My sectional is Performance Chenille in the color Nickel. There are velvets, mohair, leather, linen, tweed … the list is long. Some are performance fabrics which means they are better for families and messy folks. They clean up very easily – better than you think. And the colors are endless – I prefer something neutral as I design from a classic perspective so I don’t want it to look dated. But if you like color, you won’t be disappointed.
amazing warranty
Since you are buying a sofa without test driving it, it’s nice to know it has a good warranty. The frame and springs are good for the life of the sofa. These parts are what you want to last the most. The foam cushions are warrantied for 5 years. If you get the sofa and you don’t like it, you can return it for a refund minus the delivery and 10% within 30 days. This isn’t a bad deal.
You can read the full warranty here.
final thoughts
We have owned our sectional for about 2 years as I am writing this. That’s not a long time, but long enough to know if there would be issues, or things I didn’t like about it. I am very pleased with this purchase and would make it again. I’m happy with the size, the depth, the way the cushions stay fluffed and stay put, the quality of the fabric and performance of it, the solid feel it has, the cushy feel it has, and the way it makes me feel when I take long Sunday afternoon naps snuggled with my hubs.
I also believe it is a good value. This is an investment, not disposable furniture. This is something your kids will reupholster long after you’re gone. It’ll be like your grandmother’s sofa, only prettier and better. 🙂
Also to note, the foam and fabrics are free from harmful chemicals. That is not the standard so it is a great benefit to the way this company cares about their customers.
